Who Carries Out a Boiler Installation?

A boiler replacement involves more than choosing a new appliance. The person carrying out the gas work needs the right registration and qualifications for the work involved. Knowing how to check this gives you a clear way to understand who is responsible for the installation before work begins.

Check the person doing the gas work

Here at Westons Plumbing & Heating Ltd, we are Gas Safe Registered. For any installation, you can also check the registration of the engineer who will carry out the gas work. Ask for their name and whether they will be doing the work themselves or working alongside another engineer. This is a practical question, not an awkward one: it helps you know who will be in your home and who to speak to about the job.

Check the engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card, rather than relying on a verbal assurance or a logo alone. The card identifies the engineer and shows the types of gas work they are qualified to undertake. You can use the Gas Safe Register’s own checking service to confirm current registration. Make sure the details you check relate to the person who will do the work, not just a company name or another engineer associated with the business.

The scope matters. A registration check should match the type of work planned, rather than simply show that someone is registered for some form of gas work. If anything on the card or register is unclear, ask the engineer to explain whether their qualifications cover your installation. A straightforward explanation should make it clear who is responsible for the gas work and what their role is.

Ask who is responsible for each part

A boiler installation can involve connected work around the heating system and the boiler’s position. Before agreeing the plan, ask who will carry out the gas work and who will deal with any other tasks included in the installation. Ask who is your main contact if a question comes up during the work, too.

This is especially useful if more than one person is attending. You do not need to assume that everyone on site carries out the same work or has the same qualifications. Ask which person is responsible for the gas work, and check that person’s registration. If the planned work changes, ask who will carry out any additional gas work before it goes ahead.

You can also ask what information or documentation you should expect once the installation is complete. The answer may depend on the work carried out and the requirements that apply to your property. The important point is to understand what will be provided and who you should contact if you have a question afterwards. Do not treat a general assurance from someone who is not doing the gas work as a substitute for checking the relevant engineer.

Keep your checks on the safe side

A homeowner can check the engineer’s details, ask about their role and clarify the planned scope. Gas connections, boiler installation and other gas work are not suitable for DIY. Do not disconnect, reconnect or adjust gas components yourself, even if you are only trying to make the replacement easier. Leave those tasks to an appropriately qualified engineer.

It is also sensible to explain what you know about the existing boiler and heating system, and to point out any access issues or changes you want considered. That helps the installer understand the job before work starts. It does not replace the registration check, but it can make the discussion about responsibilities and scope more specific.

If you are comparing installers, ask the same practical questions of each one: who will carry out the gas work, how can you check their registration, what work is included, and who should you contact about the installation? Clear answers help you compare the arrangements, not just the boiler being fitted.
